Salaam Institute returned to Perth on 15 September for an intimate roundtable with company director Penny Bingham-Hall, hosted by Sparke Helmore Lawyers at its St Georges Terrace office.

The event was part of our Boardroom Secrets series, which gives professionals the chance to hear directly from people with substantial experience in business and leadership.

An Open Conversation About Leadership

Penny has spent more than three decades working with some of Australia’s most influential organisations. During the evening, she spoke openly about her career and the realities of working at board level.

The roundtable format kept the discussion personal. Guests could ask questions, raise their own experiences and explore topics in greater detail than is usually possible at a large event.

Much of the conversation centred on trust. Senior positions may come with authority, but trust still has to be earned through preparation, consistency and the quality of a person’s judgement.

Penny also discussed how influence develops inside a boardroom and how experienced leaders approach difficult decisions when the available information is incomplete.

What Changes at Senior Levels

The discussion was especially relevant for people moving into management, executive or governance roles. Technical knowledge may help someone reach that point in their career, but senior roles bring new expectations.

Leaders need to listen carefully, challenge ideas constructively and remain clear-headed when people around the table disagree.

Penny’s experience made the conversation practical. Instead of presenting leadership as a neat sequence of career milestones, she spoke about the decisions and working relationships that shape what happens inside the boardroom.

Salaam Institute Returns to Perth

The Perth roundtable also continued Salaam Institute’s work to bring its programs to Muslim professionals around Australia.

Professional events featuring senior business leaders are often concentrated in Sydney and Melbourne. Returning to Perth allowed us to spend time with Western Australia’s professional community and hear the questions that matter to people building their careers there.

After the roundtable, guests stayed for food, refreshments and networking. The conversations continued informally, with attendees able to meet one another and speak further with Penny.

Building Connections Beyond the Room

We thank Penny Bingham-Hall for giving her time and sharing her experience so generously. We also thank Sparke Helmore Lawyers for hosting the event and everyone who joined us on the evening.

Salaam Institute will continue to bring experienced leaders and Muslim professionals together through events that encourage honest discussion, professional learning and new connections across the country.
